The Vietnam war simply started because of the fact that President Eisenhower didn't want it to fall to communism. So they sent over American troops to aid the French since the French were not communsim, however when they lost to Vietminh they made a accord named The Geneva Accord, that divided Vietnam along the 17th parallel and gave Combodia independence. They did not follow this and it caused them to have a war, so America sent troops to south Vietnam to help fight, by the end of 1965 more than 180,000 American troops were fighting in the war. Now that America was in war many people apposed it and it cause the nation to break in two and many people including the youngens were angery and responded with violence. When Nixon was elected he sought to end the war, eventualy January 27, 1973 Nixon withdrew his troops and sign a peace of treaty. South Vietnam soon fell and the Nation did not want to remember the day they lost a war.
